So what good are human rights and the principles of fair play and rule of law when the biggest, strongest nation in the world chooses to ignor them. How can we make a better world when we cannot reign in the most powerful in our midst.
I believe America was founded by diversity. This is the United States of America. I think perhaps we need to step back to our Declaration of Independance. And, have every American actually read it and live it. From many lands and cultures we have grown up together to be a strong Country. Those who come here should accept that we are one nation, under God. Yes I said it, "God" is the blanket that unites us. I for one want to know if we are revising that, so I may flee to a country that is safe for Christians. We speak English, that is our Native Language. I would not go to another country and demand they conform their founding principles and/or native Language for ME. This is America and I hate to see what we are becoming. We are giving up the principles our founding fathers built this country on.
We all have our illusions of what America is and what immigrants should “assimilate” to but, until we move past our illusions, I do not believe that an honest debate about immigration is possible. An honest debate about immigration begins by recognizing that North America has always been a land of many languages and many cultures. This was the case long before the first European settlers arrived and it has continued to be the case since our fore fathers rebelled against England to form the United States of America. An honest debate also demands recognition that most Hispanic and Latino immigrants are more indigenous to North American than the majority of U.S. citizens.
